EchoCiv creates made-up societies, changes their conditions, and shows what happens under the rules you chose. It helps you ask better what-if questions. It does not predict real people, prove a political belief, or discover a perfect government.

MODELING A CURRENT INCIDENT

Separate the event, public knowledge, and institutional response

  1. 01

    Describe only what is known

    Name the incident and its source region. Record whether unlawful conduct is alleged, disputed, not yet known, officially established, or strongly supported by independent evidence.

    EchoCiv models reactions to information. It does not determine criminal or civil liability.
  2. 02

    Describe how it enters public life

    Set evidence visibility, media reach, cross-region identification, prior institutional strain, and disagreement between public accounts.

    These are separate because seeing an event, identifying with it, and agreeing about it are different processes.
  3. 03

    Compare institutional responses

    Hold the incident and starting civilization constant while comparing transparency, delay, community dialogue, coercive suppression, and structural reform.

    This isolates the model's assumptions about the response instead of silently changing the event.
  4. 04

    Follow the regional ripple

    Each region receives a different exposure based on proximity, media access, shared connections, political similarity, local capacity, and history. Inspect the explanation for every region.

    Exposure is not destiny. It only begins the region's modeled response.

For events happening now: cite the source, state what remains uncertain, and save alternative interpretations when the facts are contested. A responsible comparison is more useful than pretending the model knows the final truth.

THE WHOLE PROCESS

Seven steps from idea to reviewable experiment

  1. 01

    Make a starting society

    Choose how many synthetic people to create. Each person receives a body, needs, relationships, resources, beliefs, and a place in the social structure.

    They are fictional data records—not profiles of real people.
  2. 02

    Choose how the model reacts

    Select a model constitution. This is simply a set of assumptions about which conditions affect other conditions, and how strongly.

    Example: Does material hardship raise stress a little or a lot?
  3. 03

    Choose institutions and government

    Describe how capable, open, centralized, accountable, and coercive the institutions are. These settings change how the same society responds.

    A government preset is a testable mechanism, not a moral label.
  4. 04

    Introduce an event or policy

    Add a recession, reform, scandal, climate emergency, care program, or another change. Intensity means strength. Reach means how much of the population may encounter it.

    You can also arrange several events into a timeline.
  5. 05

    Move time forward

    During each step, people respond to their conditions, contacts, institutions, and memories. Households, regions, government, culture, and the economy respond too.

    The same seed and settings recreate the same starting point.
  6. 06

    Compare, do not merely stare

    Run two alternatives from the same starting point. Or give the same shock to all five worlds. Differences become easier to interpret when only one assumption changes.

    A comparison inside the model is not proof about the real world.
  7. 07

    Explain and share what happened

    Save the question, assumptions, evidence, results, failures, and instructions needed to repeat the run. Other people can inspect and challenge the work.

    An interesting result is not automatically a supported conclusion.

Important: A civilization average can look healthy while many people are struggling. Always check the distribution, human floor, deprivation, and exclusion gap.

READING THE NUMBERS

Most numbers are gauges, not real-world measurements

0–100

An internal score

A score of 70 usually means “more of this condition inside the model.” It does not automatically mean 70 percent, 70 people, or a real survey result.

+ / −

Direction of change

A plus sign means the measure increased. A minus sign means it decreased. Whether that is helpful depends on the measure: more wellbeing helps; more stress harms.

LOW–HIGH

A range of model outcomes

The shaded range shows how much results changed across repeated model runs. It is not a guarantee that reality falls inside the band.

A declared model rule

An arrow means EchoCiv was told that A affects B. It explains the program's reasoning; it does not prove that A causes B in real life.

Why run the same experiment many times?

Some simulated encounters contain controlled variation. One run may be unusually fortunate or unfortunate. Repeating the run shows the range the model can produce. If most runs move in the same direction, the result is more stable inside this model. It still needs real evidence before becoming a claim about society.

One complete repeat of the experiment.
Average
The middle balance across all repeated results.
Lower / upper
The lower and higher edges of the displayed result range.
Seed
A number that lets someone recreate the same synthetic starting conditions.

Choose the question you are asking

“What happens after an event?”

Use Simulate. Add one event or build a timeline, then move time forward.

“Would another choice work differently?”

Use Analyze. Run a branch, intervention comparison, government comparison, or five-world comparison.

“Where did this result come from?”

Use Map. Move from civilization to region, institution, household, office, or person. Open Mathematical Workings for the equations.

“Can someone else check my work?”

Use Review. Record evidence, limitations, failure rules, and download or publish the experiment package.

PLAIN-ENGLISH GLOSSARY

The terms EchoCiv uses

Assumption
A rule you asked the model to use. It may or may not match reality.
Calibration
Adjusting model settings so its output better matches known evidence.
Causal coefficient
A number controlling how strongly one model condition changes another.
Confidence
How dependable you believe a piece of evidence is—not how certain the model is.
Counterfactual
A “what if this had happened instead?” comparison.
Deterministic
Repeatable: the same seed and settings produce the same result.
Distribution
How results are spread across people, rather than only the average.
Emergence
A large group pattern produced by many smaller interactions.
Evidence provenance
The record of where data came from and how it was changed before use.
Exposure
How strongly a region encounters an incident through evidence, media, networks, proximity, and identification. It is not the same as impact.
Falsification rule
A result that would count against the hypothesis instead of supporting it.
Holdout
Evidence kept hidden during model adjustment and used later as a fair test.
Institutional capacity
How reliably an institution can turn decisions and resources into actual service.
Institutional response
The actions public bodies take after an incident, including transparency, investigation, dialogue, reform, delay, or coercion.
Legitimacy
Modeled willingness to accept institutions as rightful and dependable.
Model constitution
The complete set of cause-and-effect rules used by a run.
Parameter
A setting or number the model uses in a calculation.
Parameter sweep
Repeating an experiment across a range of settings to see when results change.
Posterior range
The range of parameter values that remained plausible after comparing with evidence.
Preregistration
Locking the question and failure rule before seeing the result.
Residual
The distance between what the model produced and what the evidence showed.
Sensitivity analysis
Checking whether small changes in assumptions cause large changes in results.
State hash
A short digital fingerprint showing exactly which result is being discussed.
Spillover
A modeled effect that reaches a region other than the place where an event began.
Stock and flow
A quantity that accumulates, and the named additions or removals that change it.
Synthetic person
A fictional data record used to explore rules without judging a real person.
Uncertainty band
The visible spread across repeated runs—not a promise about the real world.

A GOOD FIRST EXPERIMENT

Start small enough to understand.

Create 250 people. Keep the balanced model constitution. Add an economic shock at medium intensity. Run twelve weeks. Then compare it with the same society receiving material relief. Inspect both the average and the people near the bottom.

  1. Change one important thing at a time.
  2. Write down what you expect before running it.
  3. Look for who benefits and who is harmed.
  4. Treat surprising results as questions, not answers.
